TouchDesigner is a node-based environment from Derivative in Toronto for building real-time media systems: projection mapping, installations, audio-visual performance. Its current architecture runs on Vulkan and Metal, it hosts VST audio plugins, and it handles multi-projector output and the usual device and protocol interoperability, which is why it turns up behind so much installation work.
For cymatics specifically it fills two roles. It can simulate plate and Faraday patterns as generative visuals driven by live audio, and it can act as the control layer that ties an audio signal, a strobe and a DMX rig to one timeline.
Derivative also publish a structured free curriculum at learn.derivative.ca, organised into a 100 Series covering navigation, operators and scripting, and a 200 Series on more advanced techniques.
